Female Slave Narratives and Appearance: Assimilation, Experience, and Escape

The purpose of this study was to explore how dress and appearance functioned for African American female slaves in published narratives. Research relevant to Black feminism, usefulness of slave narratives, and literature on African American slave appearance provided a foundation for this research. Data collection was conducted by using a hybrid narrative inquiry method consisting of thematic analysis and categorical-content analysis, to interpret 708 verbatim references to appearance. Analysis exposed that the data were partitioned into two discrete themes: (a) components reflective of Control and (b) components that revealed physical and psychological Emancipation. The stories of the women in these narratives provided descriptive information and an intersectional understanding of appearance in relation to social interactions in chattel environments. Appearance enabled telling these women's life stories as slaves through the processes of assimilating, experiencing and escaping. A matrix of female slave narrator lives and appearance emerged.
The Influence of Others: The Impact of Perceived Human Crowding on Perceived Competition, Emotions, and Hedonic Shopping Value

While human crowding has been considered a driver of negative emotions, leading to unpleasant shopping experiences, other studies have found that it does not necessarily result in negative emotions but creates excitement in certain shopping contexts. To fill the research gap, this study investigates whether perceived competition mediates the relationships among human crowding, emotions, and hedonic shopping value. The authors tested the model with actual shoppers from fast fashion retailers in the United States. Results showed that when perceived human crowding is mediated through perceived shopping competition, it creates positive emotions and induces hedonic shopping value.
Preparing Students for Careers in the Global Apparel Industry: Experiential Learning in a Virtual Multinational Team-Based Collaborative Project

The study investigated the learning experiences and outcomes of students participating in a virtual team-based multinational collaboration project. The participants in the project were 172 undergraduate students enrolled in three apparel programs located in three different countries: Australia, South Africa, and the United States. To explore student learning experiences and outcomes, 66 anonymous reflective essays were analyzed. As a result of the interpretive analysis, the three topical areas emerged: Discovering New Knowledge, Acquiring New Skills, and Personal Development. Results indicate that participation in the unique learning experience helped students acquire new knowledge and skills, become more mature, and, ultimately, feel better prepared to enter the global apparel industry. Based on our findings, we propose three components that are necessary for a successful preparation of students for the careers in the global apparel industry: (a) obtaining both general and industry-specific knowledge, (b) acquiring professional skills, and (c) personality growth and development.
Fashion Leadership and Hedonic Shopping Motivations of Female Consumers

Fashion leadership is an important consumer characteristic due to the interpersonal influence essential in the consumption process of apparel. Based on the human motivations theory and Sheth’s shopping preference theory, this study examines the hypothesized relationships of fashion leadership and five hedonic shopping motivations (gratification, value, social, idea, and adventure). This study advances current understanding of fashion leadership by studying a broad national female population base and offers empirical evidence into how fashion leadership shapes consumer need for emotional and experiential satisfaction in shopping. Results show fashion leadership to be significantly related to all but one hedonic shopping motivation. Additionally, this study finds that adventure shopping motivation may be derived from other types of hedonic shopping activities. Discussion concerning how current findings expand our understanding of fashion leadership within the context of shopping is presented.
Motivational Antecedents of Social Shopping for Fashion and its Contribution to Shopping Satisfaction

To enhance the understanding of social shopping behavior along with its motivational antecedents and consequences, this study developed and tested a structural model of social shopping focused on the context of fashion consumption. An online survey was conducted with a random sample consisting of a total of 858 undergraduates enrolled at a large U.S. university. The results indicated that motivations toward social comparison were generally found to be antecedents of social shopping for fashion and social shopping contributed to product satisfaction and experience satisfaction. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
Consumer Trade-Off Analysis and Market Share Estimation for Selected Socially Responsible Product Attributes for Cotton Apparel

In light of the growing interest in socially responsible apparel consumption, this study examined the effect of fiber origin, fiber production method, and price on consumer purchase preferences for cotton apparel. Using data collected from a nation-wide telephone survey and conjoint analysis, the relative importance of product attributes and the potential market shares for products with different levels of each attribute were estimated. Analyses based on the average of each respondent’s part-worth utilities indicated that price is the most important criterion for cotton apparel with a relative importance value of 58.5%. The importance values for U.S.-grown fibers with transparency and fibers grown with sustainable farming methods were 30% and 11.5%, respectively. Cotton apparel with the combination of the aforementioned attributes was estimated to garner 32% of market share among U.S. consumers. Cotton apparel made from U.S.-grown fibers with transparency, using sustainable farming methods and offered at a medium price level accounted for a 7% market share. In general, the results indicated that consumer placed greater importance on fiber transparency relative to sustainable farming.
